External Volunteer Opportunity

Bulkley Valley Emergency Support Services (BESS), is looking for volunteers above age 16 to learn and assist with emergency disasters in both the Telkwa and Smithers areas. The volunteer must be able to respond to an emergency quickly and with his or her own reliable means of transportation, and be willing to attend meetings and training sessions.

BESS is a community-based provincial emergency response program, which provides services, on a short-term basis, to preserve the emotional and physical well-being of evacuees and response workers in emergencies. This organization plans, prepares, and responds to a variety of emergencies from a single-family house fire to a mass evacuation that may require setting up a Reception Centre or Group Lodging Facility. The goal of Emergency Social Services is to re-establish people as quickly as possible after a disaster.

Volunteers would attend BESS meetings, which are held the last Wednesday of each month from 7:00-8:30pm with the location alternating between Smithers (Ranger Park Building) and Telkwa (Council Chambers).
