Family Support Program
THE FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAM
Program Manager – Clara Donnelly
The focus of this program is based on a family approach service providing support families need to improve their inter-relationships.
The main goal is to bring awareness of the significant role parents and foster parents play in the treatment of conduct disorders and to work proactively helping them reframe their child’s and/or child-in-care behaviours and needs, modulating their own emotional response to problem behaviour and mindfully utilizing parenting strategies to support their relationship with their child/teen while clearly setting limits and expectations.
As a Behavioural Consultant the support services are focused mainly on family intervention strategies including:
•Parenting and/or caregiver satisfaction.
•Increased understanding, knowledge and skills by parent/caregiver to manage challenging behaviours of children and youth.
•Consideration of the child’s development and unique circumstances.
•Improvement of their parenting and family relationships.
•Critical incident debriefing using crisis as an opportunity for skill development.
•Help with networking and strengthen their capacity to provide mutual support as well.
In an attempt to meet the needs of all the caregivers, service is provided in a variety of modes including:
•Individual consultation (in office or outreach)
•Telephone consultation
•Integrated case meetings
•Parenting training sessions
We liaise closely with MCFD child protection workers and resource workers for referrals and shared information.
Services are offered to biological families and foster families in Smithers, Houston and Hazelton.
UPCOMING EVENTS
CONNECT PARENT GROUP
The Connect program adopts a 10-week psycho-educational format and focuses on principles of attachment, particularly as they relate to adolescent development and their implications for parenting.
This program includes experiential activities in the form of role-plays and exercises to help parents develop skills necessary to better identify, understand and respond to the needs of their adolescents.
The group is mainly formed using a referral process coming from MCFD, School District and non-profit agencies.
We are planning to run the program twice a year: spring and fall.
