Good Food Box
What is the Good Food Box?
The Good Food Box (GFB) is a box of fresh fruits & vegetables available for pick-up once a month. Each box costs $15.00 and everyone is welcome to participate – the more people who purchase a box, the greater our buying power, the greater the variety.
The GFB is a community food security* program supported by Smithers Community Services Association. Most produce is purchased from a local supplier, Bulkley Valley Wholesale, as well as local producers, when produce is in season. This program helps to support our local economy and local food producers. This is one small step in helping to build a more sustainable food system.
What is in each Good Food Box?
Each month, the selection of fruits and vegetables may change. Basic items such as: potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli, apples, oranges and bananas are usually included in the box. Other items are chosen according to what is good quality, in season, and affordable at the time. We hope to support local growers as much as possible.
A newsletter with nutrition information, recipes, food and gardening tips will also be included in each box.
Where can I pay for my Good Food Box?
You can prepay for your GFB at Smithers Community Services Association – 3815B Railway Avenue (see payment and distribution schedule below). We accept cash or cheque only.
New Bins – $5.00 deposit
In efforts to reduce the need for cardboard boxes, we are now switching to a Rubbermaid bin system. A $5.00 deposit is required on all bins. This deposit is fully refundable when you no longer use the program and your clean bin is returned. We ask that CLEAN bins be returned to Smithers Community Services before distribution day. If you choose to still use cardboard boxes, please let us know.
